Wife persuaded Alberto Gonzales to resign as attorney general

It was embattled Attorney General Alberto Gonzales’ wife who persuaded him to pack it in.

The nation’s beleaguered top lawman decided to resign last week after his wife, Rebecca, urged him to abandon his long-shot fight to stay in office, friends told Newsweek.

Gonzales’ wife told him to give up after they came back from a summer vacation, the magazine said.

His decision last week to quit was surprising because President Bush continued to strongly support him in the face of withering pressure.

Congress has had Gonzales squarely in its sights for months for myriad controversies, including the politically tinged firings of U.S. attorneys and Bush’s warrantless wiretap program.

The President isn’t expected to name a candidate to replace him until he returns from an economic summit in Australia this week.

For Hugh, the real news is the great cigar store in Ft. Worth, TX.

In the audio, Hewitt confirms Republicans will kick Larry Craig out if he doesn’t go willingly.

Duncan Hunter is now the highest ranking minority member of the Arms Services Committee in the US House. His son is a Marine (joined the day after 9/11) and is redeploying (Iraq or Afghanistan).

Rep. Hunter believes the US needs to have something less than free trade with China because of military / defense concerns.

CRIMES AND CORRUPTION OF THE NEW WORLD ORDER NEWS: Ron Paul delegates Experience Tyranny at the Texas Straw Poll

Having been on-site (and in this video in the background), I can say the following:

1. Although it is irresponsible for major media news to be dismissive of anyone, Ron Paul doesn’t have a prayer.

2. Ron Paul is doing a disservice to himself, and all of us who believe in him by not renouncing the Republican Party. I say this because the outcome of the Republican straw polls and specifically the Texas Straw Poll is simply the Republcan Machine and has very little to do with the headline of the above linked blog post (”Tyranny”).

3. I was part of an independent group who performed an exit poll on-site at this event. (not scientific). In my own experience in polling voters (after their vote), and the data from the entire exit poll, Duncan Hunter was clearly the winner. In my mind, this shows there is not hope, even among Republican Texas leadership, that Ron Paul is electable for President.

4. Most of the activities of those supporting Ron Paul as a possible Republican Candidate seem to drain energy from other activities and clear communication toward exposing the huge crimes and corruptions by a shadow government in the US.

TX Straw Poll Analysis

A few thoughts on today’s GOP TX Straw Poll …

3. Duncan Hunter is obviously a big winner here. He deserved to win because he showed up — and really worked it. He shook hands with hundreds of folks, and signed lots of autographs (mostly on tee-shirts). I can’t help but believe many of the votes Hunter got were due to his merely showing up and campaigning hard. The question is: Would these votes have also propelled Mike Huckabee to a victory here? We won’t know if this was a huge missed opportunity for Huckabee to keep his momentum going. Hunter took advantage, and for that, I give him kudos …

Ron Paul places 3rd in Texas straw poll

Ron Paul’s third place finish was a huge success considering the rules of the poll were designed specifically to prevent him from winning. As evidence, take a look at what the sponsor of the event (townhall.com) had to say:

Additionally, they refused to allow Ron Paul delegates in the door:

But the congressman said a bus-ful of his supporters was a little late and was denied entry to the straw poll. “People weren’t allowed to be able to vote?” Mr. Paul exclaimed. “That doesn’t sound fair.”

GOP officials set a hard and fast rule, though, that if you weren’t inside by 10 a.m. to pick up your credentials, too bad. We even had to pull some strings (translation: sweet talk the PR folks) to get our photographer in.

Ron Paul Supporters Make Themselves Known

Ron Paul Would be a Third-Party Spoiler for GOP in 2008

Nothing that I’ve written recently has stirred up the hornets quite as much as a piece in which I declared my support for Rudy Giuliani. I can’t say I was too shocked. After all, aside from religion and, in certain strange circles, TV soap operas, there’s little that Americans feel more passionately about than partisan politics.

Frankly, the only thing about the response that surprised me was that I was mainly raked over the coals by Ron Paul’s disciples. I barely heard from Fred Thompson’s fans and not at all from Mitt Romney’s supporters. Make of that what you will.

We Can’t Escape The Specter Of Vietnam

Oops, he did it again! When it comes to Iraq, obviously President Bush doesn’t give a flying-fig about political correctness. Good for him. From the perspective of the political Left, the president had the audacity to invoke an Iraq-Vietnam comparison, as he counseled against a precipitous military withdrawal from Iraq, in a recent speech before the Veterans of Foreign Wars at their national convention in Kansas City, Missouri.

The Democrats, their buddies in the mainstream media, and all the other Leftist elites for that matter, are convinced that they alone have the right to raise the specter of Vietnam for their own political purposes. It’s generally utilized as their peacenik paradigm of “quagmire” and antiwarism, first generated during the Left’s heyday more than thirty five years ago. Now, of course, these same “caught in a time-warp” types are also known as the Defeatocrats.

Romney Can Say Anything, and It Won’t Matter

From David Ripley, of Idaho Chooses Life

Mitt Romney, now a leading contender for the GOP presidential nomination on the basis of impressive fundraising efforts, continues to be dogged by his disingenuous and ham-handed politicization of the abortion issue. After building an impressive record as a “progressive” Republican in Massachusetts, Mr. Romney has decided that being “pro-choice” is no longer politically expedient. He has spent several months explaining his conversion to a skeptical grassroots – sometimes with effect. But in recent weeks, Romney has taken the approach of denying his own past. Now he has gone so far as to suggest that he has always been “pro-Life”, even while helping to finance Planned Parenthood. This tactic not only raises deeper concern about Romney’s understanding of the abortion issue – but his integrity as well. Another hopeful – sometimes nearly crowned by the media even before he officially announces – is also having trouble with his apparently cynical treatment of the American Holocaust during a lengthy public career. Fred Thompson, TV star and agile politician, apparently spent most of his years in the Senate maintaining relationship”

Ron Paul Straw Poll Update

LewRockwell.com Blog: Illinois Straw Poll shenanigans
Posted by Tex MacRae at August 19, 2007 08:30 AM

Ron Paul would have won the Illinois Straw Poll as well as NH and AL but for two factors:

1) As expected, Mitt Romney opened his wallet and his 8 air conditioned busloads of votes arrived on cue at the polling tent while supporters of other presidential hopefuls had to park nearly a mile away and trudge through the rainy fairgrounds to cast their votes.

2) But the real story of the day was how McKenna & crew reacted to a large number of new Republicans who turned out in support of Ron Paul’s message of Goldwater republicanism. According to rules established by the ILGOP, voting was to take place between 11am and 4pm. While Rep. Paul finished in 3rd place behind undeclared candidate Fred Thompson, it was discovered that as late as 3:30 pm Ron Paul was in 2nd place with 151 votes to Fred’s 148. Curiously, ILGOP staffers then announced the polls would remain open until 4:30pm ‘because it rained earlier,’ then they said the polls would close at 4:15pm. But alas, at 4:08pm they got the results they wanted and closed the polls. We’ll let our readers draw their own conclusions.

via Family Tax Payers Network Political Radar which also had this to say about Romney Illinois state chairman Rutherford the Sign Stomper: “The Radar goes on record here to express its disappointment in Sen. Rutherford. We’re very disappointed in your behavior, Dan. Very disappointed.”
